There was an ambulance and fire trucks on the LFP between Olive Park and Oak Street around 6:30 Tuesday evening.  I saw a couple of bikes down but dont know anything else.  Hope everyone is ok.

I think it was probably due tothis.  However, I've heard of some serious accidents on the LFP in the last few days involving cyclists.  There's a lot more people out due to the warm weather and the wind lets cyclists a lot faster than normal.

I heard about that incident involving the guy who jumped in from a police officer in the district.  He said that, as the guy was jumping, his feet flew forward and his head and lower back hit the shallow submerged concrete ledge very hard, damaging his spine.  Apparently the guy was quite the practical joker.  After he hit and started yelling, apparently his friends thought he was joking at first.  When he just floated there and couldn't move, they realized he was serious and jumped in to help him.  It was a very serious incident.

Thats terrible, but I doubt its the incident I came across 2 1/2 hours later and much nearer Oak than Ohio.

I definitely would've missed this myself since I past the Oak Street curve usually no later than 5:00. However, because of the recent few days of nice weather, I've noticed my normally sedate commute punctuated by encounters with all the "fair weather exercisers." The joggers and runners I don't mind so much, except for the idiots with the ipods turned up so loud that they can't hear me calling out to them. What really has me cheesed off is all these boy-racer dickheads who are out cranking down the path (which is CROWDED WITH PEOPLE AND SLOWER CYCLISTS), at 25mph+. I know all those racers are hot to get out and ride real pavement since they've been cowering in their homes on their trainers all winter long while us hardcore commuters have been braving crappy weather and cold for months, but geez...  Really? Can these asshats not realize that the LFP is NOT the place to be doing balls-out training?

Just wondering, what place do you recommend for that?

I've heard the velodrome is fairly nice.

How about real roads and streets?

I recommend riding balls-out anywhere but a place that is packed with pedestrians and slower moving cyclists. If you're a hard core racer and you want to get your training in then it's your responsibility to go find somewhere safe to do it. The LFP is NOT the place for high speed riding like a pro-cyclist wannabe.

I think riding darn fast is fine when it's 40 degrees and no one else is out there, and on desolate/empty stretches etc  but - safety comes first.  Even on the empty sections, kids and dogs can have a way of appearing around corners or running from the sides so speed has to always be balanced with alertness.  And with not assuming the other guy is just gonna get out of your way because you're riding 25mph, and that the oblivious jogger won't suddenly start a U-turn in the middle of the path and clip you.  When that happens it's their fault for not paying attention but it's also your fault for going too fast.

I haven't seen this thread since before your post.

I did think it was odd that he apparently broke his neck or at least hit his head hard enough to induce spinal shock, but he was described as "struggling" in the news report.
