However, those stories can be more than banter at the coffee shop, the pub, or on the road. They can be art, can bring tears to our eyes and make us laugh out loud. They can tell us more about the teller, the rider, the other people on the road, the human condition. We solicited stories from riders and have seven great ones that will be told at Sketchbook Brewery this coming Sunday, July 9 between 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm. Sketchbook is right off of the Valley Line Trail. Why not ride over, lock up, order a beverage and listen to Tales from the Trails? Hang with a few bike nerds from Skokie Bike Network and be inspired by our storytellers.

I've been noticing a number of new job postings have appeared on the site and I realized it wasn't that easy to find them all - they get a little lost in the thread. I added a new forum category, "Job Postings" to allow businesses to post bike-related job opportunities. If you see a cool bike-related job and want to share it, that's encouraged as well.

We are planning to launch an online fundraiser in the next few weeks to update and make improvements to the site, and need to get an idea if there is anything you'd like that would enhance your experience and the general cycling community here in the city and region.

With nearly 8,000 members and 32,000 unique visitors a month, our little ol' website is in need of an overhaul. There have been few updates since our inception 4 years ago. It's time to make the site more user-friendly, reorganize content, add features that have been requested, and make it easier to find all the awesome information we share daily with our fellow cyclists.

To pay for this redesign and development we're going to launch an Indiegogo campaign (like kickstarter) in the next few weeks.

We need a badass video to tell folks how great The Chainlink is and why they (and maybe you) should donate to the cause.

If you love The Chainlink, if it has changed your life in anyway, PLEASE TELL US via video! We will use parts of some these clips for the final video. You will also see Garth and Dubi at Open Streets tomorrow, Saturday, asking to hear from you and show off your lovely bikes and faces.

So what we need from you - Videotape yourself answering one of the questions below and POST on this discussion thread. Feel free to video yourself on your bike talking, standing, with a group, or alone, like me, in front of a computer.

Here is the official release:

EPA's Environmental Justice 2012 grant solicitation is now open and will close on February 29, 2012. Applicants must be incorporated non-profits or tribal organizations working to educate, empower and enable their communities to understand and address local environmental and public health issues.

The Environmental Justice Small Grants Program (EJSG) provides funding for eligible applicants for projects that address local environmental and public health issues within an affected community. The EJSG Program is designed to help communities understand and address exposure to multiple environmental harms and risks.

What types of projects are eligible for funding? Under this Request For Applications (RFA), EPA will award grants that support activities designed to educate, empower and enable communities to understand environmental and public health issues and to identify ways to address these issues at the local level under specific statutes.

The long-term goals of the EJSG program are to help build the capacity of communities with environmental justice concerns and create self-sustaining, community-based partnerships that will continue to improve local environments in the future.

EPA will host four pre-application teleconference calls on December 15, 2011, January 12, 2012, February 1, 2012 and February 15, 2012 to help applicants understand the requirements.

Environment Justice Small Grants 2012 Request for Proposals and schedule of pre-application teleconference calls can be found at:

Greetings from Croatia!

The Chainlink is coming up on its three-year anniversary, and as we approach this milestone, I'd like to reflect and share some news.

Over the past three years, our community has grown immensely. We've seen The Chainlink start with a handful of people (most of whom were unsuspecting cyclists whom I begged to join). We celebrated when we hit 1,000 members nine months later, and we've steadily been welcoming members into the community ever since. Now our community has grown to over 5,000. I've gotten to meet and get to know many of you, and the amazing community we have is a testament to each of you. Your enthusiasm for cycling and The Chainlink has been inspiring.

As with all things, even when you put your heart and soul into something, there comes a time when you move on to seek new challenges. For me, that time is now.

After much deliberation, I am stepping down as the head of The Chainlink. It's time for me to pursue new challenges and bring new ideas to life. I leave the community in the capable hands of Julie Hochstadter, who until now has been The Chainlink's Director of Marketing. Many of you know Julie, and I think you'll agree that she's a capable and enthusiastic leader. I know she'll do great things for The Chainlink.

In the meantime, I'm pursuing the next phase of my adventures. In January I left Chicago to begin a year of traveling with my girlfriend. We are working remotely while traveling - an experiment of sorts to test out being able to live a life that's independent of any particular location, so we can live wherever we want. We started a company to help companies big and small with their website and marketing needs, called Start Somewhere (www.Start-Somewhere.com) and with laptops in hand, we're working remotely on clients from home while visiting places like Colombia and Budapest. If you're curious, you can check out our travel blog: www.ourtravelexperiment.com.

During my travels I'll be in and out of Chicago, but of course you an always find me on The Chainlink or email me at leah@start-somewhere.com.

As I step down, let me say that it's been an honor to be a part of this incredible community, and to -- in a small way -- be a part of your lives. Thank you for being a part of The Chainlink and a part of Chicago's cycling community.

With gratitude,
