How to prepare for the Gary Indiana Architecture Preservation Cycling Tour.

We are less than 5 days away and here are some tips to prepare ahead of time for the ride.

- bring a bike lock so you can lock your bike during the walking portion of the tour.

- pack walking shoes if your are wearing cleated cycling shoes they can often be hard to walk in. (sandals and open toed shoes are not allowed on the tours)

- if you don't have a spare inner tube, I recommend always carrying one on you. If you are unsure what size to purchase stop off at your favorite local bike shop so they can check your tire size and valve type.

- if you haven't bought a new water bottle in awhile, pick up one of those insulated water bottles or a camelback hydration packs while at the bike shop. I have planned 2-3 shady hydration/rest stops along the way each direction to refill.

- plan what snacks you need to pack for some quick nutrition to enjoy along the way down to Gary Indiana during our 60 mile round trip ride. We will be grabbing lunch around 11:30 at the Lake Effekt 2017 festival where there will be food vendors before we start the walking tours.

- bring cash for lunch or if you prefer you're always welcome to pack your own lunch.

- ensure you have plenty of sun screen, a helmet, and sun glasses.

- make sure you get a good night sleep Friday night and set your alarm clock(s). We are meeting at The Spoke & Bird on Indiana and 18th street in The Prairie District at 8:00am.

Looking forward to this next great cycling adventure!

The Gary Preservation has added an awesome secure viewing station at the abandon U.S. Post Office for this Saturday's Architecture Tour. For safety reasons sandals or opened toed shoes are not allowed on this tour (uh hum Faraz). If you are wearing road bike shoes with cleats I'd recommend bringing some comfortable shoes to wear during the walking tour. Don't forget to register: https://adventurecycling.tours/tours/gary-indiana-architecture-pres...

PS On the scouting mission this past Saturday and we stumbled upon some intriguing solid concrete row houses. Turns out inventor Thomas Edison had something to do with their design. https://www.indianalandmarks.org/2016/06/set-in-concrete-edison-con...

Hope to see ya on the ride!

Working out the final details with South Shore Trails to provide their mobile bike racks on this day so we can lock all of our bikes at the same spot. A portion of the Adventure Cycling Tours registration fee will include a donation to their cause. A Possible location would be in front of Gary IN Union Station which is one of the buildings we will explore. I'll keep everyone posted. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Union_Station_(Gary,_Indiana) Thanks Paul Rotatori
