Description

Finally a bike extravaganza for the winter months with an urban, transportational focus, presented by Chicago cyclists for Chicago cyclists.

Join bikewinter.org, UIC College of Cycling, Active Transportation Alliance, and Big Shoulders Realty as we present the first annual Bike Winter Swap Meet and Urban Bicycle Expo!

How do I participate?
We're asking a $5 suggested donation to attend the event-- feel free to go above and beyond!
If you're a chainlink member you can RSVP to the right to express your excitement, but it's not necessary for attendance-- just show up!

So what exactly happens at this "swap meet?"
From 11 A.M. onward you'll find over 40 of your favorite shops, individuals, artisans, and advocates from the Chicagoland bicycle community selling new, closeout, and used merchandise and presenting their craft, effort, or organization, spread out over two rooms.

At 5 P.M. we'll have a fast-paced auction to benefit the Bike Winter effort directly-- donations of items to auction are encouraged and appreciated-- we will publicly credit you or your shop/organization if desired.

What's the "expo" thing all about?
We've got a slate of 20-30 minute presentations by local gurus in various aspects of urban and year-round bicycle life, kicking off at 11:15 in the Brewery Room with an overview of a recent local collegiate urban bicycle design project. Further topics include winter cycling, local frame building, powder coating, building bicycle sound systems, folding bikes, and an advocacy update from Active Transportation Alliance. Attend one, two, or all!

Where do proceeds go?
The first year is a bit of a "proof of concept"-- we're hoping to be able to bank a bit of seed money so that each successive year can be bigger and better. Beyond that, any income from the event will help support our usual bikewinter programming and help make the winter cycling season sparkle for the Chicago bike community, while promoting the bicycle as a year-round transportation solution.

What happened to the apostrophe in "Jaks?"
That's how Jaks Tap spells it-- check 'em out:
http://jakstap.com/
Click on "Parties/meetings" to get a preview of the space-- the "Green Room" is where we'll welcome you, the "Party Room" will be the main swap area, and the "Brewery Room" is where you will enjoy the presentations. Be sure to support our host on one of your trips through the bar/restaurant-- specials include $3 pints of Point Lager and $3.75 Goose Island.

Open and free wi-fi throughout the space!

A social affair presented by the transportation advocacy organization Break the Gridlock will follow from 6-9 PM at Jaks.

Steve and I will be there with a table full of bargain parts- wheels, handlebars, pedals, racks, bags, a bike or three, and all sorts of goodies to sort through! We'll also have handmade Alewyfe soaps- good for getting clean after having fun on your bike on the salty streets! Free homemade marshmallows with dark chocolate drizzle and salted coconut to our first 15 purchasers... that is, if I don't eat 'em all first. :-)

Oh yeah, we will also have a very nice Lightning P-38 with LX 105 mix and velocity wheels. It is probably the lightest recumbent I have ever had my hands on. It is a medium and red in color.
